Online business is catching on. Besides bringing the world closer, it has the attraction of trading without moving. Online business requires online marketing. Advertising through press and television is a thing of past. So the next question would be how to effectively advertise your product online. The most obvious answer would be search engine optimisation. Sounds simple, right?

Not really so. SEO takes time and effort. However, you needn’t be discouraged by that. Creating a website that is search engine friendly is much easier and better than optimising a website after it goes live. The tips below can help you out in creating a search engine friendly website without losing out the human visitors in the attempt.

Good content

Content that provides information and is given in a simple way with adequate number of keywords is always read by people. If your Home page contains a lot of long sentences and complicated jargons chances are users wouldn’t be interested in navigating to other pages. So, right from the Home page to the Contact Us have content that is relevant, original and easy to read and follow.

Easy navigation

Content is king. Old news, right? How about content can be king only in a region where there are subjects? A website’s content is read by people only when they see it. So provide easy way of navigating through your website. Label all the pages correctly. Make sure the Home page is accessible from all the pages in the site.

Lots of keywords

As you already now keyword-rich text is very important to all the search engines. However, what you need to remember is to insert your important keywords not only in your content but also in your title and description tags as well as the labels you provide for the images. Since search engines cannot read images the labels can help a lot.

Easy loading

How many times have you waited patiently for about half an hour for a webpage to load? That would be a zero, right? Unless you really really want to open the site. The fact is almost all the users would be prepared to wait at the most 10 minutes for a site to load. If it takes a long time their reaction would be to leave the page and go for the next. Hence, it is always better to avoid large graphics and long animations that would make the page load slower.

Avoiding dynamic URLs

Search engines prefer static URLs. If you have been in the SEO community you would know that by now. Try to avoid dynamic URLs as much as possible.

Good domain name

Unfortunately Shakespeare’s “what’s in a name” doesn’t work here. Your domain should always be connected to what you intend to say in your content. In fact, your visitors should get an idea of what they are going to see by your domain name.

Sitemap

If you have given excellent content on all pages of your website and nobody can see it, then what’s the point? To avoid that have a proper sitemap. Sitemap is a good assistant to the search engines to crawl through all the web pages in your site.

Balanced text and graphics

Search engines can read only text content. Hence, too much of graphics is not going to help. At the same time, too much of text content is going to drive away the human visitors whom the site actually built for. So you need to take care to have a proper balance between the text and the images and animations in the pages.

Number of backlinks and text

It’s better to have a limited number of links on a single page in your website. Similarly, the maximum number of words on a page should be between 200 and 1500. Certainly not more than that.

Internal linking

Linking the different pages within your website makes the path clearer and easier for the search engines to crawl. It also makes things easier for users, be it accessing a product from the Home page, going back to the main page from an internal page, accessing the contact details without searching for the Contact page, etc.
