Bing Optimisation: Some Tips

Unsurprisingly, whenever an article is written about Bing, it slowly changes the track and proceeds to talk of the differences between Bing and Google. None can be blamed here, I guess. When Microsoft launched its own search engine, Bing, it was kind of anticipated. Considering the immensity of Google’s popularity, it was a bold step. Anyway instead of going for the usual Google vs. Bing duel, let us see a few search engine optimisation tricks that can be done for Bing.

Though it baffled the webmasters and SEO experts for some time, Bing algorithm later on turned out to be quite interesting. It didn’t take much time for Bing to gain some significance as it is evident from how it very soon overtook AOL. So what are the factors that Bing considers important in ranking a web page?

Age

Bing seems to love websites that are old and, hence, reliable. Apparently, a site that has been around for some time has been there for a reason and is hence likely to be there for some more time. Though other search engines like Google and Yahoo! also give weight to age-old domains, Bing seems to have it in its top list of priorities.

Content

Now this sounds recurrent. Which search engine doesn’t consider content? But Bing indeed seems to have a preference for sites that have a lot of content in each of its pages. However, it seems that Bing doesn’t care much about whether the content is frequently updated or not. Which could be why ancient web sites rank high in Bing.

Keywords

The list is becoming more and more recurrent. This is also another factor considered important by other search engines. But what is more evident in the case of Bing is its preference for sites that have the keyword in the domain name. Even though stuffing of keywords is not advised, there are indeed sites that come up in top 10 lists that have the keywords heavily stuffed.

Page size

According to the guidelines of Bing, a page without images should be less than 150 KB in size.

Site architecture

Again, Bing guidelines say that ‘each web page should only be from one to three clicks away from the default webpage.‘ Which shows that Bing mostly prefers a site whose architecture is simple and flat.

Web standards compliance

Though some of the searches in Bing have brought sites with quite a few markup errors, Bing on the whole prefers websites with well formed markup. This means that Bing ranks sites that comply with the standards higher than those that don’t.

URLs

URLs that are simple and don’t change often finds preference with Bing.

Backlinks

As with other search engines backlinks are important here too. However, Bing also prefers links from sources that themselves have a lot of backlinks.

Anchor text

Anchor text that is relevant to the content in each page is yet another favorite with Bing.

If you are planning for an SEO with Bing in mind then the above hints are for you. You’d have found that optimising with Bing is also quite easier than that with Google.
